Data Processing & Sources
This page explains how BeverageIndex collects, processes, and presents beverage pricing data.
Data Sources
All pricing data on BeverageIndex is derived from publicly available cost-of-living databases. These databases aggregate pricing information contributed by individuals and organizations worldwide. We do not conduct proprietary surveys or collect pricing data directly from vendors.
Primary data points include prices for common beverages such as a regular cappuccino, domestic beer, imported beer, cola, bottled water, milk, and wine, as reported across thousands of cities globally.
Processing Methodology
BeverageIndex uses an anchor-and-ratio methodology to generate a comprehensive price dataset:
- Anchor Extraction: We extract verified prices for approximately 9 anchor beverages (e.g., cappuccino, domestic beer, cola) from the source dataset for each of our 100 tracked cities.
- Ratio Application: For the remaining beverages (approximately 300 total), we apply established price ratios relative to the nearest anchor. For example, a latte is typically priced at 1.05× the cappuccino price in the same city.
- Variance Adjustment: A small deterministic variance (±5%) is applied using hash-based calculations to reflect natural price variation within a city. This process is fully deterministic — the same input always produces the same output.
- Comparison Calculation: Each price point is compared against the global average, continental average, and nearby cities to provide context.
Source Tiers
Every price on BeverageIndex is labeled with a source tier to indicate its origin:
- Tier 1 — Verified: The price is sourced directly from aggregated public data. This applies to anchor beverages where the source dataset contains a direct data point for that specific city.
- Tier 2 — Derived: The price is calculated from a Tier 1 anchor price using a standard ratio. The majority of our 30,000 data points are Tier 2.
