Data Sources

BeverageIndex combines several openly available datasets with editor curation. Below are the primary inputs.

Numbeo

Numbeo’s cost-of-living dataset provides community-submitted price entries for everyday beverages (cappuccino, domestic beer, imported beer, water, mid-range wine). We use the city-level aggregates as our primary input for prepared drinks and supermarket staples.

Kaggle public datasets

Several Kaggle community datasets cover historical alcohol prices, coffee retail benchmarks, and global beverage trade data. We use these to back-fill drinks that aren’t covered by Numbeo (specialty spirits, regional teas, juices) and to widen the historical baseline.

FX rates

USD conversion rates are taken from publicly available reference rates at the data refresh timestamp. Each city has a stored currency_rate_usd snapshot.

Editor curation

Our editors manually review outliers, cross-check against published café and supermarket menus where available, and remove obvious bad data (wrong currency, decimal-place errors, single-venue inflation).

Please contact us with the city, drink, and what you’ve seen on the ground. We particularly welcome corrections from people who live in the city in question.
